Pros

This is the smartest group of people I've ever worked with. Committed to the mission - to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. Big things are happening in Washington - we're tackling climate change, creating a healthier Puget Sound, the challenges of conservation in a rapdily urbanizing society. We still work out in the big forests - temperate rainforests of the coast and dry forests of the interior. We're also working in the marine realm now. One of the most fun things about Washington is we have every type of system - ocean, rivers, mountains, shrub-steppe, forest - and the Conservancy is working in all of them. Also Seattle is a hub for the Conservancy's global work - we have people working here who are working on conservation all over the world. And people who are not based here come through here all the time. So you do really feel connected tot he global mission.

Cons

The Conservancy can be hard to navigate at first - it's a complex organization with people working on many environmental issues, both on a hands-on level as well as a policy level.

Pros

Colleagues are top-notch, the work is personally satisfying and inspirational, the mission is noble and gratifying (to protect the lands and waters on which all life depends).

Cons

It is a highly decentralized organization, and reorganizations in the various operating units happens frequently. Because of the decentralization, there is no strategy for keeping long standing, highly qualified and successful employees (for example, by simply moving them to another operating unit). Therefore, many terrific people leave the organization, often times to return years later (which speaks highly to working at the Conservancy).
