Sometimes the HQ Executive Leadership gets enthralled by the latest buzz, and moves out ahead of the organization - burdening it with layers of costs - without resulting in any tangible benefits, before getting enthralled by the next shiny object. These Exec folks are not as dyed in the values as the local on the ground staff, since they sometimes work at TNC because that's the only job they could land in the beltway. TNC definitely gets better the closer you get to the land in the field offices . . .

Pay is low - I have been here over 5 years and my annual raises didn't even keep up with the normal progression of rate increases for my salary grade. This ended up meaning that after 5 years of working here, there were people being hired in at my grade level, probably making more than I was. Lack of tuition reimbursement - when you get here, you better already have your degree, because even if you want to study another field or continue your studies, there is no tuition reimbursement. They have great resources for taking a class here and there, but nothing formal, so if I wanted to learn more about marine biology and I only had a BSc in biology, I would have to take formal classes on my own. No advancement - If you are ready to move anywhere - great! I'm sure there is a position that fits your experience and education. However! Once you are in a position, be prepared to stay there for many years to come. I have been in the same position for over 5 years and although I am ready (have been for quite some time!) for some upward mobility, there is nothing around unless I relocate. And then, you are competing with EVERYONE and their brother. They should really have some sort of internal mechanism (that works, because they tell you they have these things, but I have never seen them in action) where you can cross train or make a lateral move to a different department (the kicker here is that you don't have the experience in that specific area - like if I have worked in Philanthropy, I wouldn't be able to move laterally to IT because I don't have IT skills).
