Pros

I really cannot say enough about how wonderful my experience was working here. I've worked in a combination of electoral campaigns and non-profit initiatives and I have never been in the presence of a more positive work environment. From the beginning, the upper management was both extremely accommodating to my personal needs and plans, and extremely supportive throughout my training. There was constant feedback and validation, especially from Steve (the Regional Director) who would take time out of his schedule to do one-on-one checkins whenever possible, and constantly verbalize and recognize when we were doing good work. There was transparency about company objectives to the point where Clayt (the founder of The Outreach Team) had a meeting with my entire team about the prospective goals/ partnerships that the organization was undertaking for the year. This level of communication is unheard of in this realm of work, and really helped each of us understand the overarching strategy we were apart of. My colleagues (fellow directors and organizers) were unbelievably positive and supportive, making a point to check-in with each other constantly and really get to know each other at a personal level. The pay was great, and the opportunities to travel to cities where field offices were opening was amazing. As far as the work itself, this is a job for people who want to take an active role in advocacy. It's challenging work- you're going into your community and initiating dialogues about very challenging subjects. But, if you have been feeling futile or frustrated about the direction this country has been going in, and have been looking to take an active stance, this job is for you. It gives you the autonomy to work by yourself and actually make an impact. It's tough but rewarding, and when you are working with people who do nothing but bring each other up and support each other, it's hard not to feel fulfilled at the end of the day. I miss you all dearly, it was such an honor to be around such talented, driven, positive and wonderful people- I'll be back in the fall!

Cons

Canvassing is not for everyone, so be sure that you are okay with engaging in challenging dialogues in your community with people who may not share your world-view.
