Pros

The people, Toast hires good talent that is capable.

Cons

While the people are capable, they're siloed. The org is really poor at aligning efforts and complementing each other, while instead they all set their own goals. While I was there we started to unify some things but it took effort from middle managers. Upper leadership only cares about metrics, I've seen this in a lot of other reviews and it's 100% true. They say they care and are sincere, but if you don't hit your numbers god help you. There's always someone or something to pass the buck and no one takes accountability. Work/Life balance also isn't a thing, I regularly put in 60+ hours a week. The clientele work around the clock so the expectation (for salaried employees) is you do the same. We brought up this concern, but again got the answer back that we needed to find ways to hit ridiculous numbers. Expectations changed FREQUENTLY. Many companies do this but not to this degree. We'd literally have something said that would change within the week that was largely impactful to bonuses, performance, reviews, or other items that should at least be set in stone for a quarter to get your bearings and not be under constant change management with little explanation as to why. Turnover was very high, especially on the Sales team, which put a huge burden on other teams to clean up messes whether that was Support, Onboarding, etc. Sales frequently sold things incorrectly or provided expectations that couldn't be met so escalations were common. It was hard to understand who's word to trust, at times, client or internal Sales. Overall if you end up working here it might be good for a while. But eventually you'll see how much of a tangled mess there is to deal with and progress to do so is slow at best. I'm rooting for Toast, I truly am, but I'd be lying if I gave any higher rating to a company that I gave so much of my time that ended up laying me and half the company off with little notice. Tough times sure, but the lead up to the entire layoffs was a huge fiasco and many, many teams were caught off guard while a much rosier picture was being painted.

Pros

- Great product - Great benefits - Professional development opportunities - Queer-friendly

Cons

A lot of other reviewers here nail it: this job is incredibly territory/manager dependent. No individualized target/goal setting; every new AE has the same quota regardless of territory/market share. Increasing quotas and a recent change to quarterly bonuses made meeting/exceeding OTE feel unreasonably challenging. Low base salary. Expect a grueling workload. Very little work/life balance and unrealistic expectations from management. Hard to take time off because of quota attainment expectations, despite “unlimited PTO.” If you’re prone to burnout, beware. Issues around customer service and customer onboarding often fall on AEs to rectify, and those issues seemed to have been exacerbated after a round of layoffs in early 2024. If you can stick it out and/or wind up with a great territory and a great manager, this could be a lucrative job with great benefits, but you’ll be sacrificing a lot of work/life balance to do it to spec and maximize your earning potential.

Pros

Great benefits and culture in general. Niche, innovative things you’d expect from a Silicon Valley tech startup that set it apart from other corps and makes you feel you’re a part of something “cool” and exciting. I was fortunate to have positive leadership on my team and district. Many spif incentives outside of the normal comp structure. Money is lucrative if you have a territory that can support the quota ask. Company is constantly evolving with new modules to offer. There’s always someone to turn to for help and support on issues or learning in general

Cons

Success is extremely territory dependent. Quota is the same for everyone at the base AE level and aggressive, so be ready for no work life balance. You can put in triple the work an AE colleague does, but will never see their type of comp due to your territories opportunity vs theirs. Consistent 100% attainment is expected. Signing a deal is one part of the battle, but expect to spend a lot of time keeping a customer to get them through onboarding to live in order to actually see comp from the deal. Quota goes up every year and the pressure never lessens. A lot of work goes into many different areas that can make you feel you’re doing 20 roles in 1.
