Arrogant and Abusive Management!

Pros

Can't think of any positives.

Cons

Tolmar's senior management has: 1. Created a caustic culture that is characterized by the use of only one motivational tool - fear. 2. Made really bad (bordering on incompetent) investment decisions that led to employees losing their jobs and whole business units being liquidated. All this without consequence for the senior leaders making the poor decisions.

Pros

Good benefits (401k match is 9%, 3 weeks PTO and 14 days vacation) and good starter job. There are some good people here that want to make a difference but hard to get around management (see below). Overtime can be worth your time in money and extra holidays.

Cons

Short story: Abusive, fear and blame culture, with loads of overtime. Run far away. Long story: They are constantly understaffed because of how terrible they treat their employees so you can expect to work lots of overtime and have mandatory extra days. Note: they keep track of these things so if you draw a line with work-life balance and say no you will never move forward in the company. Management also works obscene hours so it is definitely a top-down problem. They preach that they will never retaliate for you speaking up but I have seen constant retaliation in preferential treatment, not speaking to employees, passing over employees for promotions, and calling employees "stupid" and "unmotivated" when everyone is killing themselves for their job. I would compare it easily to emotional abuse. They will also send you from site to site (about 30 minutes apart) without notice and will not reimburse you for your time and gas. In order to get a promotion you are graded on how many things you do WRONG in a year- not right. They do not have a culture of learning and support- rather fear and manipulation. They seek to blame you versus actually fix the problem and will frequently make a scapegoat out of you to save their own butts because they are eligible for bonuses- not you. Managers are promoted because they are the "favorite children" even when they do NOT have the experience, people management skills, or even education to be promoted. If you get in upper management's good graces you will be promoted while the rest of the team struggles. There is not a team attitude here- it's every man for themselves. They are hoping you do something wrong. People are frequently "let go" without any notice or reason why. This only perpetuates the fear culture and leaves you terrified. If you make an innocent mistake, you will pay for it here, versus other companies that will help you learn & grow. HR is corrupt and does not look out for you. I saw another review state that HR can be compared to a high school cheer team and I wholeheartedly agree. They watched as leadership told me what I shared was "invalid" and lets management walk all over their employees. The "open-door" policy is really you opening yourself up to be ridiculed by HR and management- they do not take actions. The HR team and management team is extremely unprofessional. I have never felt so torn apart and abused by a job and management that I was working 50-60 hours a week for. It's not worth it.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. We're sorry to hear that you did not enjoy working with us at Tolmar. Along with most companies, we have had our struggles with being adequately staffed in some departments, especially over the past two years. It is regrettable that you felt unwelcome to elevate your concerns to higher leadership, even as far as our CEO. We welcome the feedback you shared here, and our goal is to filter communication back down to our teams to identify any improvements that are necessary.

Pros

Excellent benefits. Friendly hard working employees. Job security. Great gate way to learn new skills. Opportunities for advancement within the company.

Cons

Pay is well below industry standards in the area. If you are not liked, you will be shown out the door, despite how well you work. Poor lower management and supervision. Many people simply stay because, like my title says "it's a pay check." Many employees I know are trying to get out. I have a few years of watching problems get swept under the rug here, then watching the company react when these problems arise to bite them in the rear.
