Pros

There were literally no pros to working for Total Spectrum. The only good part about working here was sometimes seeing minimal improvement in the children I was working with. The BCBA's on my case had no idea what they were doing and the parents of these children were oblivious to that fact.

Cons

I can't even begin to describe how awful it was working for Total Spectrum. First of all, they don't listen to your needs at all. I told them I was a college student as well as caretaker for my elderly grandparents, my uncle who had cancer, and for my mom who had cancer. They had me doing a 45 minute commute when I told them repeatedly that that wouldn't work and they just kept telling me to fill out mileage reimbursement. The BCBA on my one case never responded to any of my emails or really helped me. The BCBA on my other case was just so rude it was incredible. I don't know how they landed that job and I would be interested to know if she even had her degree in behavioral therapy to even be a licensed BCBA. That was another joke. Total Spectrum would literally tell the families that everyone was registered as a behavior technician, which wasn't true in the slightest. They give you 6 hours of online training that you can completely skip through and then tell you you're eligible to take a 300 dollar exam after your BCBA approves you after seeing you in your sessions, which is a confidentiality problem. I finally quit when I arrived to a session one morning where a sibling in the household was sick and vomiting. This child may have been contagious and they still wanted me to work with the child on my case. Firstly, that would contaminate me, plus the other child and their family at my later case in the day. Not only that, but then if I were to visit my mother, who has brain cancer, at her rehabilitation facility, she could have gotten sick and passed it on to other residents. After expressing my concerns about this, I was basically told that my take on the matter did not matter and I quit on the spot.

Pros

Looked good on paper and will tell you what you want to hear in the interview.

Cons

At first glance total spectrum might seem like the full package. However once working for the company you will soon realize the problems. Upper management does not care about the clients or employees. Their biggest goal is to grow and create an ABA empire. I began working for the company hopeful and wanting to continue to grow as a BCBA but soon realized they do not care about you just your productivity. I worked every night till 8pm and weekends, after multiple conversations with management and how I was experiencing burnout they blew off my concerns and adding additional clients to my caseload. Till the end they did not care about the clients I worked for or ny own well being. They just continued to take advantage of the "salary" position and that i needed to be available at all hours for them. I would definitely steer clear of this company, and wish I knew this before taking the position.

Pros

They pay decent Can give additional hours/clients if desired

Cons

Only paid for client facing time, which means if you arrive at work on time and client doesn't you are working for free which is illegal but they don't care. They will work you 7 days a week and not care about your well-being, they only care about their bottom line. Since merging with Learn their policies have become more confusing and no one knows what is going on. Merger has not been a smooth one. If family cancels on you then you don't get paid. For some clients this happens more often than not so you better have a back up plan to pay your bills.

Total Spectrum Response

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear of your experience with Total Spectrum. We're always striving towards excellence and taking a look at how we can continue to improve overall in every element within the company. Here at Total Spectrum, we are dedicated to providing high quality services for our clients and their families dealing with Autism Spectrum Disorders. We rely heavily on our training program, which is a requirement for all of our therapists to go through. If we do have any kiddos who may be more physically aggressive, our team will always reach out to our therapists first to see if they would feel comfortable joining their team. It is not mandatory for any of our staff to join these teams if they are uncomfortable. In addition to making sure our staff is aware of any aggressive clients, we also have each of our therapists who will be joining these teams go through additional training called QBS Training before they are even introduced to these kiddos. This training allows for our therapists to learn different ways of how to respond and de-escalate these behaviors, as well as learn how to best move the body and hold the body in the most comfortable way making sure that any one involved is being safe. I'm sorry to hear you've had some abrupt changes to your schedule too. We do work hard to schedule make-up appointments, however, this is not always possible due to our families'/therapists' schedules. Our team of Client Service Coordinators let our therapists know as soon as possible of any cancellations. If our staff ever arrives to a session that is cancelled, each therapist will still be paid for the first hour of that session. We appreciate any concerns to be directed to our HR Department as we are always looking to improve our practices.
