Pros

You can build a great little team if you can get them to work for a little more than minimum wage. Great stock performance. Monthly sales bonuses. Annual profit bonus.

Cons

Bonuses- If you blow it out of the water on a bonus (can make your pay worth it) you will definitely suffer from performance punishment of the next budget. Payroll. It is the easiest to control of expenses. You will never have a budget enough to run efficiently and the budget will constantly be cut to increase profits. You're reviewed on turnover. If you give satisfactory ratings to your employees, they get a 3% raise, but since you were required to cut 3% in payroll throughout the year, your budget will remain flat with a more expensive team. Turnover in Store Leadership is very high as you can't pay people enough to keep them. Fundamental problems in processes and supply chain with a deaf ear to fix any root problems that have cost associated. This is the cheapest company I've ever worked for. The SSC drives record profits times after time with stock that perform the best in retail. This is all done on the backs of the store personnel who are all overworked and underpaid while multi-unit managers and above bringing in great bonuses for the profits they drive. This company once published a book "Work Hard, Have Fun, Make Money: The Tractor Supply Story" showing how they decided to focus on the "Niche" market of the "Hobby Farmer". This is no longer the case as the company is now looking to the masses of everyone and losing focus on the farmer that laid their foundation.

Pros

Very good relationship with customers and co-workers. Great feeling of satisfaction and self esteem when solving customers problems, and providing for their needs. Great varieties of duties. Never a dull moment.

Cons

Over the past 10 years, the companies focus has changed greatly from providing products to support the farmer/rancher livestyle. They have dropped or greatly reduced the products traditionally provided in favor of decorative, novelty products, furniture, etc. Original management retired, the company went public and it now all about the bottom line. Payroll has been reduced to the point where we often ran the store with only 2 people, for up to 4 hour periods of time.

Leaves money on the table!

Pros

Strong code of ethics consistently adhered to. Customer's generally pleasant, fun to deal with; fewer problem customers than big box. Fair amount of schedule autonomy but needs of the business often dictate. Definitely not accountable for as many metrics as big box.

Cons

Compensation scale for hourly associates low; you end up hiring competitor's rejects. Payroll percentage among the lowest; you make up the difference. Planogram/set changes never stop; many seem pointless. People who built company and understood our customer are gone; senior management has no experience at store level, does not identify with our customers. Priorities have shifted from having "lifestyle" employees (read as knowledgeable and experienced in farm work) to having employees who are good cleaners. Being spotlessly clean more important than anything else. Being in-stock simply not a priority for last 6+ years; systems in place for sm to improve levels of A velocity sku's very ineffectual.
