No HR, Union Busting

Pros

My coworkers are wonderful, they make the job worth having at all- save for a few of my coworkers in management who have adopted a more authoritarian management style- ridiculous for a Trader Joe’s

Cons

Upon speaking with many crew members about harassment claims and disrespectful treatment and then realizing that there is virtually no HR department to bring these claims to past higher management, I have become full of despair in regards to this job. They have created an echo chamber and are likewise unchecked in their union busting tactics.

Pros

- Many customers were absolutely wonderful - Good options for different dietary needs - good starting wage

Cons

I had an awful experience with management and coworkers. For five months the Captain and one of the Mates who was basically second in command were targeting me specifically in retaliation for when I went to one of the mates about how the second in command made me uncomfortable with how she talked to me when giving me critiques six days in. After that during my five months there, I was pulled out a minimum of two times every few weeks. I dealt with bullying and double standards from them about things like my pronouns, neurodivergency, breaks, needing rides, and communication with coworkers. When I would bring up the reasons I was being pulled aside and lectured/critiqued to coworkers, they would point out how this never would happen to them despite doing the same things. My last day there before I quit I was pulled to the back for two hours by my Captain and 2nd in command, where I was told they had never had this many problems with a crew member and brought up when i first went to one of the mates about how the second in command had made me uncomfortable. That was when I knew I had to leave. Every critique was followed by how this is a positive work culture they worked hard to cultivate and how I was making it negative. It's hard to be positive when you're always having to watch everything you do. I had some great mates! But if the 2nd in command or store captain doesn't like you, it's an AWFUL experience. I was also bullied for a few months by a coworker who other crewmates had had issues with as well.

Pros

Good pay, OK but shrinking benefits, some smart people. And a variety of people, sorta.

Cons

Where to begin? Company is becoming just another supermarket and they have done it entirely to themselves. The benefits are constantly shrinking. They were wonderfully generous at one point. Now it’s tough. It is an odd passive – aggressive and sycophantic culture at the administrative level. We have too many leaders looking for clones rather than looking for capable people. We have some major talent loss on both coasts. And it is the young and flexible talent that is needed here. We are left with the lifers who tenaciously cling to the idea that the Trader Joe’s of yesterday still exists. The stores have begun grumbling. While there are still many who drank the entry-level Kool-issue. Oh well, fun to watch them walk back all the stupidity of the big DB, lately. See you at the captain’s meeting!
