Pros
You get to work at a different location and construct multiple different types of set ups daily. O.T after 8 hours. Time and a half on Saturday and Double time on Sunday. Set up work zones for reputable companies that supply electric, gas, water, etc. monthly employee of the month announcement with gift card. Supervisors check crew’s daily to ensure all work zones are properly set up. Supervisors will assist with any issues you are having and are always eager to answer any questions. Crew chiefs get to take home their company issued van. They also pay for fuel in the vans which is great because you can sometimes travel pretty far and multiple locations in a day. Chances to prove your knowledge and skills on big highway jobs. Special classes to advance the skills you are using every day. The trainers are great with mixing training and entertainment to keep you focused and engaged. Basically you won’t feel like falling asleep while an instructor just talks and show videos. They are great at making you laugh and keeping you engaged while also training you the not so boring way. Can’t find a job where you get to spend all day outside perfecting your knowledge of work zone set ups every singe day. Your job is to set up, monitor the work zone all day, then breakdown the zone when finished
Cons
Weather could affect if you work or not. Not really for people who just want to show up and go home because every day is a learning experience you will need to remember and apply towards future work zone set ups. Motorists sometimes yell at you just for doing your job. The work load depends on contractors and how many requests for traffic control crews they need. So if it’s slow in the winter you might get some off no work days if you’re new because they make sure the crew chiefs who put in their time get to work. You can’t watch videos or talk on your phone while standing outside because you have to always have eyes on the work zone so if you’re heavy into posting and reading social media this is not for you and trust me they do enforce this rule. I seen people who ignore this rule get written up but rightfully so. Its mandatory to wear toe protected boots and will be sent home for wearing sneakers so if you think you can wear your new air maxes because you want to try to see if you can get away with it, this isn’t the job for you. Sitting in the van all day is also a no no but those who understand this job know you need to be visible, alert and willing to stand for long periods.
