Not up to par with their chief competing carriers

Pros

Financial stability of the organization and sound underwriting discipline.

Cons

Micromanagement from senior management has a chilling effect on individual initiative and growth. Management utilizes databases and information that is either of questionable relevance or inaccurate as a measurement. Intensely political organization/management that focuses almost entirely on image and the appearance vs. competence. All organizations are political but Travelers field management is incapable of accepting feedback and do not solicit it from their employees. If you are aspiring manager who seeks to make an impact ,be an innovator, and achieve notoriety for what you have to offer or your skills then seek another organization. Travelers wants square pegs in square openings. Other carriers at their competition level or more flexible and produce greater rewards for their employees. The bonus or variable compensation is significantly less then their chief competitors and performance management differentiation is downward driven and weakly managed.

Pros

Incredibly well organized No confusion about why the company exists, it exists to make a profit for the shareholders Good underwriting knowledge and practice

Cons

Travelers places so much emphasis on underwriting as a skill skill base that they dismiss other skills as unimportant. Employees that have served as underwriters are given preferential treatment no matter what skills are required for a given job . On the other hand, if you have not ever been an underwriter, that will always haunt you, no matter what job skills are required There is a large push to lower the average age of the Travelers workforce, many people over age 50 are being pushed out the door, in favor of younger workers
