Pros

Good way to earn extra money if you need to work from home Many children are very appreciative You can choose your own hours. Software for using the site is sophisticated and helpful.

Cons

They cut all employee pay after I finally made it to Tutor 3, the highest paying tutors. This was a significant cut - not what certified teachers should be earning. Some mentors assigned to me were helpful, but a couple were very "nit-picky" and unrealistic. I was assigned as an essay tutor, although I didn't apply for it, and I told my superiors that I could do the editing (grammar, spelling, etc) but not the reference errors. My mentor kept counting this against me, and I was unable to get out of this subject and stick with others where I was more comfortable. I finally quit.

Pros

Can't beat the flexibility in scheduling. You log on whenever you want, can work as little as a few hours a month. You need to know your stuff (kids expect you to know the answers to complex math problems off the top of your head) but averaged over a lot of sessions, good work is recognized by the management.

Cons

It is difficult to get hours. You often have a long wait times between students and sessions are short (you are pressured to keep them under 30 minutes) so it is hard to accumulate paid hours. On top of that you are capped at 4 hours per day. So even if you can hit your max your total pay will be low. I rarely hit my max despite being logged in 6-8 hours/day, except around mid term/final exam weeks. On top of that, the only time that is is busy is when kids are doing their homework, which is around 5-9pm ET. Hardly any students log on until school is out at ~2 pm ET. This makes it ok if you have a day job and want to work through dinner, but means it cannot be your day job unless you live in Hawaii. I had one really exceptional month in May during exam time where I took home $1000. Most months it is ~$300-$400 because I am logged in but there is no one to tutor.

Pros

Online tutoring, no need to commute. Flexible hours, can schedule a few hours in advance or logon and wait for students without scheduling (they use the term float). Tutoring is open 24/7, students may come any time. Can work from any location with stable Internet access and standard PC. Great students. Performance-based bonuses. Promotions are rather easy to get for qualified tutors. Some mentors are great and fully support and encourage tutors in good and bad times.

Cons

Strict policies regarding session lengths (cannot work with a student longer than x number of minutes), acceptance percentages (must accept more than y% requests), x and y depend on the subject. Violations may result in warnings and terminations. Sometimes it is difficult to explain a concept or work on a problem and stay within limits. Certain questions may be outside the subject area but there is no clear rule to determine that. Bonuses and tutor employment depend heavily on student ratings some of which may be undeserved but cannot be removed. Some mentors are not so great and only concentrate on negative sides. Stress because of the above.
