Pros

Most people don't realize that there is so much more to TXDOT than engineering and construction! I am a Traffic Safety Specialist and manage grants associated with traffic safety. However, I also do much more! The best part of my job is the community outreach that I do! I do traffic safety presentations at schools to educate youth about the dangers of drinking and driving, texting and driving, not wearing their seat belts and much more! I even present to our littlest youth on bike safety, pedestrian safety. I am also a Certified Car Seat Technician that helps families ensure that their child is in the safest car seat for their age, height and weight! I have the most incredible supervisors and bosses! They are encouraging and supportive! In addition, TXDOT has the best state benefit package! Our health insurance is covered 100% for ourselves! We also get VERY generous vacation and sick leave as well as VERY generous holiday leave that includes all state holidays as well! TXDOT pays for your training and education if you wish to pursue it! We have the ability to telework, work four ten hour days instead of five eight hour days a week and have very flexible work hours to choose from! We are also provided state vehicles when traveling! Working for TXDOT is like being a part of GIANT family that always has your best interest at heart!

Cons

The only con I can think of is that working for a state agency may not be the highest paying career out there, but its benefits make up for that! It can be difficult sometimes to get raises and there may become a need to move to different positions in order to gain a salary increase. However, TXDOT does prefer to hire from within, so the opportunity to advance is there if you seek it out!
