Pros

I started at TxDOT, went to the private sector, and then came back to TxDOT. After having both private and public sector experiences, I can confidently say that TXDOT is the best place for an E.I.T. to learn everything in a better learning environment and at a faster pace without feeling pigeon-holed. Take advantage of the rotation program- they usually start you in roadway design, then traffic, and finally construction management. You are also not obligated to work over 40 hours and never have to work weekends. Work-life balance is exceptional here.

Cons

Pay could obviously be better but then again, the civil engineering industry comes with a low standard of pay than other engineering industries (government contracts, etc).

Pros

Great people to work with; caring and competent executive leadership; dedicated employees committed to serving Texans; strong training program to learn new skills or to change career direction; positive career growth, due to the complexity of the many projects and programs.

Cons

technical career ladder is a bit more limited than the management career ladder. The work load at times can be excessive in certain work areas, while light in others, so the work is not always balanced.

Pros

Stability and a steady work environment. It is a great place if you like having a flexible schedule. It is also a place where you can obtain quite a bit of knowledge within the civil engineering discipline.

Cons

Unless you are trying to become an engineer or are an engineer there is virtually no ability to advance within engineering. Basically stated, it is hard to impossible to advance as a design tech.
