Backstabbing

Pros

Well-funded school and well-prepared students, compared to other local ones.

Cons

Entitled students, alienated faculty. From reports I heard constantly from full-time employees, and from direct experience, there seems to be culture of backstabbing here unlike any I've experienced anywhere. There's some solidarity evident among grad students, which contrasts markedly with the typical anti-solidarity among faculty. It's partly because few faculty live in town, almost everyone seems ashamed to work in this city, and almost everyone acts like they should be anywhere else. I guess because in their profession and within the UC, they tend to feel dissed, they tend to bully each other and anyone trying to get work here. The city's not so bad, actually, aside from an atrocious self-image.

Pros

Good sense of community among graduate students, good and great professors to work for, nice unpretentious arts and outdoors culture in Riverside if you look for it, easy access to LA and the high desert.

Cons

The student to TA ratio has increased with the state budget problems. Most undergrad students don't put in an Ivy League effort into their work, obviously. Not really any downsides as far as the research side of things goes.
