Pros

Good place for a student to get programming experience if you are working for a computer science professor.

Cons

Sometimes, work can get in the way of studies. You may be asked to also work on different things throughout your time working, so you never get time to focus on one particular skill.

Pros

Finding a supportive professor for whom you can work consistently in a volunteer capacity until they are willing to pay you is not always easy, but I have experienced it personally and have friends who have had the same experience.

Cons

You may not work more than 19 hours a week as a paid student researcher. This means that if a project you must work on requires more than that the extra time isn't paid. Usually, though, with classes on board it is difficult to work 19 hours anyway.
