Pros

As most academic positions, your experience is very variable based on the professor or principal investigator you're working directly under. I had a great experience with mine and stayed much longer than I had anticipated because I enjoyed it so much. Healthcare was subpar compared to when I was promoted to staff scientist (Kaiser) but you'll have access to discounted family housing and childcare as a post-doc. The salary is quite good compared to what is received nationwide and increases stepwise each year. Also generous sick leave and PTO.

Cons

Childcare options limited in the area HMO is Southern California generally not good Do not accept a contract longer than a year which will lock you into a salary because the union bargains frequently for increases which you won't be eligible for later.
