Pros

- great city - good university - no problems with getting work students - close to the ocean - great opportunities for collaborations - very collegial atmosphere to the senior management

Cons

Unfortunately, very little career opportunities and very little support in applying for external, financial support. Most departments do not post the seminars anywhere central - you won't know that someone you always wanted to meet is next door.

Pros

During my time as an undergraduate student I consequently worked in multiple different departments at UCLA. HR managed this extremely efficiently. Even in the humanities, there are several paid research opportunities that give you access to researchers/professors that are well-respected in their fields.

Cons

Hours per week expectations may be hard to manage. Be clear about your work availability and ask for flexibility during exam periods.

Pros

I was a reader for a course at UCLA. It is a relatively straightforward job, and allows you to review and solidify your knowledge of a course you've previously taken.

Cons

The work (grading) can be somewhat repetitive. Other than that, there are not really any negatives about being a reader.
