Pros

Large complex company with plenty to learn. Never bored. They focus on both grocery stores and distribution along with the reselling of grocery services such as store design, IT services, accounting, etc. They are one of the largest grocers in the US giving them significant resources for investment in systems and business initiatives. They have grown significantly through acquisitions which always keep the staff busy and leads to a dynamic and active environment.

Cons

Like many companies, SVU is outsourcing to India for IT and business services. This poses significant challenges to both on and offshore resources to successfully execute on projects. Many off hour meetings, long days, etc. This is no different than many other IT shops. Additionally, the company is headquartered in MN and as expected most of the hiring is done there. The senior managers, decisions makers, and most initiatives are all located at the MN locations. Resources at other locations, while treated well and fairly, are likely at a disadvantage for career advancement unless they are willing to move.

Pros

The compensation and benefits at Supervalu are middle of the road according to Salary.com. The employees respect each other and work well together. The company culture is relaxed and somewhat informal.

Cons

Personal development and advancement opportunites are very poor. The promotion process has become very complex and requires an incredible amount of documentation. In order to be promoted you have to provide incredibly detailed information about past projects. Since the promotion process is fairly new, no one knew to keep track of all this past information. (Lesson learned!!) Since the company doesn't have the information, if you don't have it either . . . oh, well . . . no promotion for you! Also, American associates are being replaced by outsourced associates from India.
