Pros

Great benefits - days off are called PTO (paid time off) and can be used either for sick time or vacation time. Our supervisors were generally very flexible when we asked to take time off. The ability to buy paid time off each year, the ability to carry over unused PTO and the low cost of medical/dental/vision benefits have me (kind of!) wishing I still worked at UPMC. Their benefits are seriously good. Did I mention the ability to earn PTO for simply donating blood to the Pittsburgh Blood Bank, on UPMC's time?

Cons

Lack of communication from superiors; Some employees are hired in plum positions based on promises or personalities, not experience, then prove disappointing; Questionable decisions such as the dismantling of the corporate communications Web team (are they regressing instead of progressing technologically?) that kept the Web site current and growing, at the same time the site was experiencing great demand from internal departments wishing to publicize the medical services offered; The president's right-hand woman has lots of influence but tends to base decisions on her like or dislike of employees, not evidence that the presented idea will or will not work or whether the proposed idea will benefit UPMC as a whole.

Pros

many opportunities to go elsewhere within the system. the ability to obtain many opinions from doctors throughout the system. easy to find jobs, basically on any unit because nurses are so understaffed. there are many classess available for continuing education, upmc shadyside is very up-to-date with computers (meaning computer charting) making life a little easier as a nurse,. shadyside hospital is a teaching hopsital so it makes it nice working with interns and residents because they are still learning so they do not speak down the nurses and respect our opinions (normally)

Cons

poor hourly rates. there are barely any hospitals to compete with. since upmc shadyside is a teaching hospital, working with interns and residents can be more work in itself. always having to second guess their orders. in an emergency it can be difficult because they dont always know what to do. Inturn nurses work ten times harder causing dissatisfaction hence understaffing and nurse turnovers. upmc does not give sign on bonuses anymore, lack of equipment on units avaliable such as pulse ox's, bp cuffs, broken medication carts, and ....

Pros

Being a nationally well-known hospital, having UPMC (no matter the specific facility) on your resume is a definite plus. There are numerous types of jobs available ranging from the normal '9-5' desk work to the '24-7' hands-on work with patients. Whether you are a student, fresh-out of college, looking for a career change, or just need a job ASAP, you really can't go wrong with UPMC. Specifically within WPIC, the workers are diverse (age/race) and it's a good place to get experience working with mental health patients of all kinds. Plus, the benefits and retirement package are decent.

Cons

The turnover rate is high, which is never a good sign. WPIC mandates (mandatory overtime) their workers often mostly due to the shortage of employees, and direct care workers often work understaffed on their units. Working with patients is very stressful and can be dangerous at times depending on which population you work with... the employee shortage does not help these matters at all. Loyalty and trust between co-workers/supervisors is questionable. There are no worthwhile incentives offered by management. Favoritism and general unfair treatment is seen between select supervisors and co-workers. Equipment and furniture are old and outdated, and there's often a shortage on towels and bed linen on some patient units. How that happens in a place that racks in billions in revenue (not-for-profit or not), I don't know. Oh, and parking sucks.
