Pros

Research positions here are quite nice, you don't have the stress of working at the hospital. UPMC also has an affordable health care plan, 14 days of upaid leave and seven holidays, so a total of 21 days off in a year for entry-level employees. Research Assistant positions also maintain normal workday hours (i.e. 8:30-5)

Cons

UPMC is a bit stingy with some of their other perks. For instance, they don't subsidize your parking fees or bus pass (there is an option to get a pre-tax bus pass from UPMC itself, but the process is incredibly tedious and only saves you about $7 a paycheck). Holiday time is also based on doctors' work schedules, so those working in non-clinical positions end up getting less holiday time than their counterparts in University of Pittsburgh-affiliated labs.

Pay vs workload is unfair

Pros

Work with great people, rewarding feeling saving lives and bringing peace to family members during their time of need.

Cons

Pay is terrible in comparison to workload. The harder the worker the more the responsibility. People that do the bare minimum are never asked to contribute more. Feels like you're being punished for doing a good job. Stressful environment. Always working short staffed. Pay is way below national average. Company mentality is if you don't like the pay, you can leave and we'll how someone newer and cheaper.

Pros

Large company with a lot of jobs, stability, decent rate for pay

Cons

large corporate culture , you're just another person. People who get promoted usually have a family/friend connection that guarantees a management position. They'll be in the same department, but "report" to a different manager to avoid an HR conflict, but really it's rigged. Go see for yourselves.
