Pros

The PTO accumulation is fairly generous. I'm not sure how it compares in quality to other multi-billion dollar revenue companies, but there is a retirement plan.

Cons

Generally, Human Resources is very unresponsive to employee inquiries; it is an atmosphere of secrecy, command and control. Academic credentials are given enormous weight throughout the company - don't expect actual job experience or performance to get you very far toward finding another job within the company unless your academic history is a close match for the job you want. Do a great job or a poor job and the reward is the same - a regular paycheck and a 2.5% raise once a year. Your shortcomings will be noted in your performance review; there is always at least one shortcoming that can be recalled for inclusion there. Concerns (well, concerns of a certain kind) move up the chain of command quickly - each level of management wants to avoid negative PR, no matter how petty the issue, and feels the need to report to *their* supervisor before making many decisions. I usually see the following pattern: supervisor-->Dept. Director-->Clinical Administrator-->V.P. I kid you not. The job of Service Coordinator (mental health) itself, apart from the general UPMC environment, is about the same as one would expect it to be anywhere...lots of petering calls and demands from people on SSI asking you do things for them. Plus, there is a lot of paperwork solely for documentation and record keeping purposes.

Pros

-You can pick your own shifts. -If you are outgoing, you can interact with doctors and physician assistants that will give you opportunities to shadow them, which is great for college students planning to go into healthcare. -Work with some great people who care about their patients...until they get burnt out.

Cons

Morale is way down. Understaffed and cannot keep up with the hotel like stay that is expected. High stress. Management is out of touch. UPMC health plan is garbage - very high deductibles and cannot see any doctors outside of UPMC. Raises were deferred two years to the point where new hires were making more than those with years of experience. Low pay compared to retirement communities.

Pros

Opportunities for advancement are immense in the right field and if you are in the 'in' crowd. It's very much a click network.

Cons

Once you reach the top you tend to have a target on your head. Routine layoff's of upper manement are the norm.
