Not what it used to be

Pros

Early in your career you get a lot of satisfaction from performing your mission in a direct leadership role. Benefits are good. Healthcare is greatly improving. There are lots of opportunities for self development and improvement, provided you are not "too valuable" to allow time for self development.

Cons

Promotion system inherently reinforces narcissism. Lots of people join or stay for the social programs and benefits as opposed to wanting to be a Soldier or for patriotic reasons.

Pros

The benefits, education, and opportunities for advancement are great for those that need to start a new career, cross-train, or take care of a large family. Benefits are great.

Cons

You can expect to be regularly moved (every three years) and may have to go places that you don't want to go.
