      If you don't mind the year long deployments, this is a recession proof job.

      Pros

      The benefits are hard to beat. The medical and dental are pretty good. It is socialized medicine so you don't have to pay for a thing but appointments can take a long time. And if you have a condition that in unique you could be in for a rough patch as you will have to go to a specialist somewhere in the US, probably not near your home.

      Cons

      Long deployments. Most jobs are very long hours but you get used to it. As and officer you will work longer in the office. You often work with people that are very different from you. While diversity on the surface is a good thing, if you don't know how to talk to people from a different geographical region fro yourself, you're in trouble.

      Relevance and retirement benefits. Active duty benefits are also great.

      Cons

      Work days are long and time away from home can exceed 14 months at a time.

      Frustrated with the contradictions, inefficiency, and blatant contradictions...not worth the time away from my wife.

      Pros

      Stable profession in a struggling economy. Very easy to get in, even as an officer.

      Cons

      Extremely difficult to get out. Inefficiencies, wasting of time, takes too much time to accomplish very little training. Lots of money thrown around needlessly. Wait ten hours to perform a ten minute exercise. Too much focus on APFT and Army schools. It's okay to admit mistakes; I won't look down at you anymore. You don't have to hide your mistakes/incompetencies to save face. Stop preaching respect when you can't give it yourself.
