Safe, secure, but limited

Pros

Unmatched job security, decent pay (after the first 6-10 years), and unlimited training opportunities (within your career field). Strong sense of community and extremely diverse population.

Cons

Creativity and initiative not rewarded. Leadership has tunnel vision based on their personal past experience. Height-weight standards are arbitrary and favor short stocky people with fat necks. Fitness standards are not job related - just age related. "Fitness" objectives favor training for the test - not true healthy lifestyle changes and choices.

Junior Military Officer

Pros

Extremely unique. You have a chance to really hone your leadership skills and each day is never the same as the last. You'll meet a wide-range of people from all over the world. The sense of camaraderie between many folks in the Army is very strong.

Cons

The US Military is a very socialistic system. Promotions are time-based, not performance-based. The quality of junior soldiers and officers can vary widely from excellent to terrible. Once these individuals are in the military it is very hard to remove them from the military if they are sub-standard performers. Some soldiers use the military as a welfare system and do the absolutely bare minimum to get by and because they never do anything particularly wrong, there isn't much you can do about it.

Pros

- Trial by fire jobs will teach you the most about yourself and give you valuable management experience - Salary and benefits provides a comfortable lifestyle - Leadership experience and international experience can be leveraged across many sectors if you decide to make a career transition out of the army

Cons

- Forced to pick up the slack for incompetent peers - By the time you make Major (O4) staff work takes the fun out of the job you used to know and love - Official evaluations of most personnel are inflated
