Pros

Decent pay, plus reimbursement for mileage. Paid weekly, after a 10-11 day wait once you have worked your first full week. Night differential pay (extra 10%) after 6:00PM on weekdays. Saturday and Sunday pay increases and carries the possibility of overtime, but I don’t feel much like working 6-7 days a week in the 100°+ temperatures. Initially offers flexibility in work scheduling.

Cons

No accrued leave, no holiday pay, was promised overtime on the weekdays. On my second day in the field, overtime was curtailed, and we had to switch to a 3:00PM-9:00PM work schedule. Overtime would only be allowed on Saturday or Sunday. Took nearly 3 weeks to obtain a copy of an SF-50 (Notice of Personnel Action). SF-50s and pay stubs cannot be accessed online, as enumerators are not provided census.gov e-mail addresses. No advance notice where you’ll be working until the morning work is assigned. I’ve been assigned to neighborhoods I wouldn’t walk around after dark. There is no place to park in many of these neighborhoods due to narrow streets. It’s been 100°+ for the last three weeks, and that makes for an unpleasant workday, especially when you’re going door to door in the hopes that someone will be able to help provide answers to assist in closing out your caseload each day. No permanent opportunities when you start as an enumerator.
