      Pros

      There aren't many good things to say about the Census Bureau.

      Cons

      This place is run by authoritarian managers who enjoy belittling employees. If your manager is a veteran, then you better be careful because that manager will NEVER be fired no matter what they do or say to you. They can fire you for any little mistake like forgetting to attach a document to an email. It was the worst experience of my professional career. The director of the Los Angeles location even told staff the reason she took the job 20 years ago was because it was one of the few places she could have power. She actually said that in a staff meeting!

      Supervisor is Key to Success

      Pros

      Get out of "the office"! No isolation as you're interacting with the public. Develop great interviewing and people skills. Terrific benefits after 4 years: annual and sick leave plus retirement account with government contribution. Flex hours.

      Cons

      Occasional unhappy respondent, but few if you're good at the job. Top management has no interest in input from field personnel, is out of touch. Job works ONLY if you have a good supervisor. Some surveys are poorly written and too long. Pay rate can be frozen at low level, with no opportunity to move up the ladder.

      Great people, but the organization could be a lot better

      Pros

      Great people to work with and lots of cooperation and communication across teams. Enumerators were especially dedicated considering the challenges they were up against.

      Cons

      Antiquated systems that didn't talk to each other. A lot lacking by way of options in the software to cover what was needed. Several great managers and a couple really bad ones. Enumerators unavoidably faced difficult and dangerous circumstances in the field. HQ in Chicago was ignorant or stubbornly uncaring and unyielding about some of the challenges in Duluth and blocked, rather than helped us. More integrity in Duluth than in Chicago. Chicago payments to enumerators to cover stays away from home often weeks late, putting enumerators in financial jeopardy.
