The flaws of a forceful government, but a company of good people
Pros
The U.S. Census Bureau hired a good team of enumerators, field supervisors, and office admins for the 2020 ten-yearly census. I appreciated my census field supervisor, as well as my great colleagues, and the several field office administrators who took the liberty of onboarding the local team. I found the bureau's online training helpful, and the frequent communication between our local team made networking a breeze. Our crew helped each other when needed, which was a serious plus!
Cons
Unluckily, the United States and its grossly excessive layers of government come with inherent flaws that affect the Census Bureau. The use of force, for one, is part of the social culture at the U.S. CB. I've never felt like an intruder before, but when employed by the U.S. government I felt a sinister entitlement to trespass where I was not welcome. Bullying, amazingly, also emerged as a problem during homeless enumeration ; I and a supervisor sparred some nasty interactions, ending in retribution against me by early job end. Once again, I blame the toxic culture of the U.S. government for this behavior.
