Pros

Decent salary, reasonable schedule, good benefits, varied and interesting work

Cons

Difficult to get private industry experience recognized during application process. This directly affects a) whether you are hired b) your salary level. Difficult to change grades once you're hired.

Pros

Very flexible schedule. Pay rate is high. Supervisors are considerate and knowledgeable about the job. Employees are even reimbursed for transportation and phone call costs.

Cons

The 5 days of training is sometimes non-negotiable with its scheduling, and since its 8 hours on each of those days, it can pose as a problem to some potential employees who are unavailable during any of those times. It's rational though, since it's team training, and missing any of those days makes it hard to get you back in with everyone else. However, there are some times when there's an option of a rescheduling.

Pros

There was a week long prep course where you should absorb everything that you can. You are then let go to work on your own. The job involves going from house to house and verifying addresses. They change a lot in ten years. You are taught what to do in each scenario that can occur. You have a hand held computer that you input all your information and send it to headquarters every night. You are paid for your mileage. You are on a team. You meet twice a week with your team. You are paid for all of that. It is quite a fun job.

Cons

Houses high on hills and you have to walk up to the porch. A steep climb. Working in the rain can be bad for some but I didn't mind it. If you have arthritic knees or legs, they can hurt. Everyone at the Census Bureau is a temporary employee, so things can seem right confusing sometimes.
