Pros

Great opportunity to take on very high levels of responsibility at a relatively young age. Respectable pay and benefits. Develops leadership skills.

Cons

Government rarely has your best interests in mind. Bureaucracy can be extremely frustrating and painful. Officer promotion is based primarily on time in rank; vary rarely will officers be promoted for exceptional talent. This leads to large numbers of senior leadership, such as admirals, being more politicians than warriors.
