Consider this before applying
Pros
I heard plenty of good things prior to working at USPS. The only tangible truth I saw was the great hourly pay. Part time gets no benefits. Great co-workers who were always willing to help, I could tell some of the supervisors were more people-oriented, I had a reliable truck, overall good work environment minus the intense pressure to be quick on routes. Briefly interacting with the few customers I encountered and knowing I delivered their mail properly and timely.
Cons
You’re under a microscope from the get go. You’re supposed to as quick and efficient as all other carriers immediately, regardless of route or other factors. Ineffective equipment: don't get stuck with a tough route (i.e. brand new neighborhoods, route layout) that renders your navigation ineffective, the turn-by-turn directions are not specific enough and sometimes outright wrong. If stuck on a tough route that looks bad on your numbers you could get fired despite recent improvement, it doesn’t matter. My release was “based solely on averages” was what I was told when I was let go. Never mind showing up early every shift, not calling off once, no safety issues, no mis-deliveries, taking time off clock to gather maps and research the neighborhoods involved. Some supervisors don't consider any other things besides one's stats. You’re just a name on a spreadsheet. Relied heavily on my phone for navigation. Pay hours have some fluctuation.
