Pros

Schedule - Typically five 8hr shifts, Mon-Fri, Weekend call every other month, Weekday call once per week. Tuition Reimbursement at 100% if you are .6FTE or higher (Will change in June 2014) Surgeons are friendly and fun to work with for the most part

Cons

RNs have little to no say in practice/policy changes within the Surgical Services department. Call pay is decreasing to only $2.25/hr and getting paid for a minimum of 3hrs (starting in June). Limited availability to take vacation. Management doesn't support staff who "speak out" they are labeled as "trouble makers" and treated with a threatening attitude. Many changes taking place in June 2014 including a 6.5% decrease in pay.

Pros

They offer very good benefits. There is also tuition reimbursement program for education in medical field. Big organization offers some opportunities for professional development.

Cons

It is a big organization and you are just a small part of the machinery and you can fill it.

Pros

Great work envirnonment. Critical care unit is well supplied, well staffed, professional and employs best practices. Respect from MDs on the unit and true autonomy in practice. Culture of excellence.

Cons

Cannot read emails during contract negotiations because it is too upsetting to hear about the hospital management trying to cut critical items from nursing. Magnet status, Best nursing quality per ANA, Stroke center, etc, yet pay, benefits, etc being threatened by management, Please dont advertise how excellent the nursing is in one breath, them turn and try to cut pay and benefits in the next! Lift issues are ignored although turning patients every 2 hours is required, and nurses are constantly injuring themselves. Computer charting is soooo redundant, with dozens of required flowsheets per hour, that RN, have lost alot of bedside time. "Quality Assurance" initiatives undermined by discipline overlapping, as in lab errors. No overtime allowed, so any minutes over 12 are deducted from vaca or floating holiday time.
