Pros

I had the opportunity to join Uncommongoods as a seasonal employee before earning a spot on the year-round team. I don't use the word earn loosely. As a seasonal team member, you work really hard to be the best of the bunch every day, for however many months you are there. The CEO is very transparent about the nature of their business. He looked at each and every one of us in orientation and told us that even if we did our best work we may not get a year-round spot. Not because he didn't want to hire rockstars, but the business could only sustain so much headcount during offseason. I respected his honesty and still worked my behind off to earn a spot on the team. It is truly a team. I worked with some really talented people and built relationships that I still have to this day. We supported one another, helped out whenever necessary, and used an all hands on deck approach when there was ever an emergency. The collaboration was unlike anything I have experienced with other employers. The other thing I loved about Uncommongoods was that the employees have the ability to voice concerns and make real changes within the organization. We were able to give feedback in annual surveys to any department about what we thought could be different. Some of that feedback actually got put into action. The right team members can have a very positive impact on the organization. It is also empowering to know that your voice matters. Lastly, I will say that Uncommongoods is not for the selfish or greedy. This is not the organization for someone who wants to be MVP, feed their ego, and get fancy titles. This is not the organization for someone who can only be made happy by compensation. You will not be successful or satisfied. Just a word to the wise.

Cons

There are far worse organizations you could work for. Uncommongoods is not perfect and on my first day, they never claimed to be. Like any organization, they have areas that could use improvement, like better training for managers. I could say that only having seasonal work is a con, but it is the nature of their business and they are upfront about it anyway. I would say the thing that could be most beneficial to the organization is management training. Improved leaders will measurably increase the productivity and engagement among team members.

Thank you for sharing your feedback and we appreciate the suggestions for how we can improve. Management training is something on our radar for 2019 and we have already started some training this year with Preventing Harassment training for managers and as well as 'How to give and get feedback' for both managers and team members. We continue to strive to be the best place to work and our team members' suggestions and feedback are essential in us achieving our goals. Thank you.

Pros

The year round ream is really friendly and helpful. Training is awesome and you’re partnered with a coach to help you continue to learn and get better. It’s clear that they made an effort to make sure that each team member felt valued.

Cons

Seasonal. Not enough hours scheduled to get all the work done, which stresses everyone, even the managers, out.

We also value your feedback related to having a large workload and will regroup with our team to see what we can do to mitigate stress. If you have additional feedback, please don't hesitate to reach out to me at scullen@uncommongoods.com, Best, Sean
