Skill development (director-dependent): If you land under a strong principal or director, you’ll learn how to execute at a very high level. Expectations are close to perfection, which forces you to sharpen your systems, communication, and follow-through. Those skills do transfer well outside of education. High standards: You will learn how to be relentless about deliverables. Metrics are often treated as 100% or bust, which trains you to move fast, stay organized, and produce under pressure.

Cons

Perfection culture = distorted reality: The push for perfect outcomes often leads to fudging, selective reporting, and quiet dishonesty higher up the chain. On paper, the data shines. In practice, it’s more complicated. Unrealistic student outcomes: The system rewards getting students into top colleges without enough regard for debt, fit, interest, or readiness. Counselors often do so much of the work that it blurs the line between student ownership and adult intervention. Short-term wins, long-term costs: Many students struggle or drop out later because they weren’t truly prepared to navigate college independently. That part of the story doesn’t make it into the data deck. Compensation: Pay is not competitive. Despite messaging about a “total rewards package,” the salary scale does not match workload or expectations. Calling it competitive is misleading.
