Pros

Union county tries to take care of their own, and in my experience, micromanagement was kept to a minimum. The benefits are great, so make sure you take advantage of them. Taught a lot of incredible students and loved the people I worked with!

Cons

Obviously, pay, especially with the cost of living around Charlotte skyrocketing. Unless you're in the country, the budget will be tight. Parents have a lot of pull at a lot of schools, so you'll have to learn to handle this yourself. Escalation to superiors will likely result in siding with the parents. Politics are huge, and the school board is horrendous.

Pros

The students that I have encountered test well, however they do not understand nuance. They can only think if the scenarios presented are based upon black-or-white concepts. Both students and teachers are very comfortable with low-level questioning and lean more toward indoctrinating students than educating them. Having the students write or speak about their thoughts is a very difficult task.

Having the students write or speak about their thoughts is a very difficult task. Additionally, UCPS is not diverse and they are actively taking steps to remove multiculturalism from the curriculum altogether. The pay also leaves much to be desired. There are very few opportunities for growth unless you are willing to play politics.
