Pros

Work life balance is great in the accounting department, most Sr. Managers are out of the office by 530. Compensation is great compared to Omaha cost of living. Not competitive at all (this could also be a bad thing)

Cons

Promotions are slow to come by usually taking over 2 years for your FIRST promotion while employees in other departments at a much faster pace. Leadership is unprofessional and rumors spiral out of control. No control of next assignment causing employees to become bored with their VERY simple jobs. Too technology heavy (finance majors do not want to write code!)

Pros

Union Pacific offers very competitive pay and benefits, especially for the midwest. The culture has significantly improved over the 15 years I've been with the company. The newer senior leadership knows how to run a company effectively and is in tune with it's people, it's not your grandfather's railroad anymore. The retirement benefits are best in the country. There's a surge of younger employees which is great for the culture.

Cons

There can definitely be some long days, especially for field operations. Although senior leadership constantly tries to address this issue, it will always be an issue. Heck, it's a railroad that runs 24/7 regardless of holiday, weather, etc. If you're able to accept the working conditions, you'll be happy with everything else!

Pros

Great benefits, rewarding work, professional atmosphere, lots of room to grow and expand within the company. Awesome facilities and benefits. The corporate workforce is older and close to retirement at UP so there is much room to grow for new hires. Will be quickly promoted.

Cons

Very small cons, the commute can be long unless you live close to the building. Also parking can be an issue.
