No work life balance

Pros

Great retirement benefits but you need to make it there first! Long hours and high expectations to come in on your own time.

Cons

Work life balance doesn't exist in operations. You are in call 24/7 in many instances and no relief if something comes up. There is no such thing as calling in or taking a random day off.

Pros

Great pay and benefits

Cons

Worse environment I've ever worked in. The managers have this "out to get you mentality," which makes the whole atmosphere toxic. B/C of the extremely strict attendance policy most people will come to work sick. The work is stressful at times but the overall culture is the most stressful.

Pros

Pension. Pay is only base salary, average for engineer is about 100k. If you like trains then this is your job.

Cons

Horrible hours, never know when you go to work. You may work all night with zero sleep. You can work outside a lot. You will miss holidays and special family events. Jobs are based on seniority, if economy is bad you may face temporary layoffs.
