Pros

Money's good. Benefits are good. Retirement is amazing. Most of the people are friendly.

Cons

I'm not even sure where to start. I'm in HR, and it's frustrating to see all of the mismanagement and unfair treatment of employees. Our objectives will raise arbitrarily from one month to the next, but there is little to no support from management to achieve those goals. These arent small increments, either...our hiring goal for 2014 went from 3200 to nearly 6,000 in twelve months. I've got co-workers contacting me every single day, either in tears or threatening to quit. Sometimes it's both. There are levels of stress that were previously unimaginable. Vacations are denies. Then we are scolded if we try to take our vacation at the end of the year. Also, nobody will let us carry over vacation days...so if we do not use them, we lose them. Our managers try to help, but they ore overwhelmed to. God forbid there be some actual compensation for this extra work, either. WE get several "thank yous" from our bosses, and those are fine. But after so many twenty hour days they lose their impact. Days off never happen either. A teammate was on vacation and was cheewed out for not responsing to emails wheh she was gone. Our HR managers either unfit for their jobs, simply don't care and are running out the clock until they retire, or are so out of touch with whats happening in the field and even in home office that the employees are wearing down. Requests for help are not listened to. Extra effort means nothing. Working early, late, nights, weekends, holidays is expected.

Pros

The only pros are the work is not very physically demanding.

Cons

The working conditions and hours are horrible at best. The company leaves the toilets in the cab of the locomotives with heaping piles of poo in it for employees to breath all the time just for an example. The management are arrogant and totally out of touch with the employees and are constantly trying to find things to fire people for. Warren Buffet once said Union Pacific is the most mismanaged gold mine in America. No truer words have been spoken. The constant harassment from management alone is enough to make a person quit. The benefits keep going farther and farther down. They will give you a raise that equates to about $5 because they counter any negotiated raises by increasing your contributions to your health benefits so you really never get a raise. It's like pulling teeth to get paid any claims etc. Just all around a horrible place to work. I would definitely NOT suggest this career path for anyone, not even my worse enemy.
