Cons

Everything secret to wives, company should involve more family oriented rather than employee only should encourage family travel once a year at employer expense.counseling for families to stay together may not be good for some men if they have wondering eye, or newly married if travel position wives need to stay n loop on money and bonuses that employees get

Pros

The pay is good. The benefits are good as well but seem like they may be more expensive. UP offers a challenging work environment in a good way. Perfect place to work for someone who gets bored with their job because portions of it will continually change and you can always just bid somewhere else and do something different.

Cons

They preach safety is the key to success. I believe this too, but it seems we are way to quick to terminate people over smaller things, then when something more severe happens to a person higher up in the company... It gets swept under the rug. We are starting a new process to educate and use others mistakes and experiences to educate everyone else. Being union is a good thing because they have fought for what we have now, but they have been deemed pretty worthless here as of late. Seems like a waste of dues. But!! That's all part of the game.

Pros

Prestige exists in name only.

Cons

My nightmare with this place started with my first day of conductor class in North Platte, Ne. The instructor had several don'ts on the board as if we were in 6th grade. One of these was push in your chair or you will get written up. Two write ups and you get fired. WOW!! He got pissed off when you called him "sir" instead of by his first name. SAY WHAT!! He jumped from one book to the other during lectures and by the time you found where he was at, he had moved on. Ask him to slow down and he would soon be back at it again. He kept getting off task and start joking with the younger students about whatever and then complain that he needed more class time to teach. He also said that a couple people in the class were old enough to be his father right after he got through talking about EEO regulations. Management also would come into our classes everyday to tell/remind us what a great place this was to work. Like trying to convince us. They also made a joke of how we would have all this money and toys at home but have no time ourselves to enjoy them. Older conductors tell me they hire a lot of people and then look for ways to fire you. Glad I am out of there. Politically correct atmosphere.
