Pros

Protected by strong labor unions, well compensated (see below), excellent healthcare and wellness, and loads of other discounts and benefits. The railroad is going through a renaissance, and should provide a long term profession that you can retire from.

Cons

Many TE&Y jobs are on call 24 hour a day, and 7 days a week. There are no regular off days or holidays. The employer can be rather draconian in regards to employees taking non compensated days off. The pay does not seem to have kept up with rising cost of living expenses. In light of what is required of us we should be making 100K plus. UP's management style is iron fisted, and out of touch. This occupation works outside in all weather conditions.
