Pros

Based in SFO for 5 years in my 20's. It was a great time in my life, met a lot of interesting people and got to see the world. Great experience to have on the resume, never ceases to impress and fascinate employers looking for people skills.

Cons

United's company culture is pretty negative/jaded. It has gotten better in recent years though. The job itself was fun, but totally exhausting. It wrecked havoc on my mental and physical health. The reality of the flight attendant lifestyle is hard to explain, one has to experience it to truly understand. I had hard core anxiety for most of it. This is a very, very hard job to quit (because there is nothing else like it), yet many stay despite not seeming truly happy. This effects morale big time. Personally, I needed more structure to live a healthy and happy life. I like going home to my own bed, cooking my own food, and not being taken out by jet lag.

Pros

International and Domestic travel benefits for self and family. Flight benefits are dependent on whether there is additional space available on the aircraft. They are called "Stand-By" tickets (unconfirmed seats... you get to the gate and put your name on a list... then ONLY if there is space available... you will get assigned a seat/ ticket). Total cost of flights for self and a very select number of primary beneficiaries(I had 3) will cost you approximately 10-15% of ticket price. This percentage can change depending on where you are flying to. I paid $150 for a one way ticket to Tokyo.

Cons

You do not get to directly choose your base location from ALL of the United bases! When you are in training you will be given a list of bases with available flight attendant openings. We were given 6 choices of locations around the United States and asked to rank our preferences. Then when we received our base assignments our entire training group was sent to only 2 of the 6 bases. We were told we could transfer within 6 months. Although this is true... if the base you are wanting to work out of does not have openings you will not be able to go there until space becomes available. Some places have a transfer waiting list of 1,000+ people. All transfers are based on seniority. Also, Flight Attendant Pay does not change whether you are based out of SFO (higher cost of living) or Houston (lower cost of living). Having experienced being based out of both base locations; I can definitely say that a salary of $1,600 a month while living in the bay area should be illegal.

Pros

I love people. Their stories and integrity will always amaze me and TEACH me. Do not judge a book by its cover until you've walked a mile through it. I've worked in high paying management positions where stress can get to you over time... and where you are also stuck in your own office for long lengths of time with little to no human interaction. I will never go back to that. I took a chance at change taking the job I have now with United. I decreased my pay substantially and increased by commute 100%. Why? At first it was about people and wanting to be around more in general. And now seeing the return in the form of smiles and thank you is one of the best gifts and highest paying perks a person can unknowingly receive. Me and most of my co-workers go above and beyond for each person we interact with. United is your family when you are not home or have none. There is always someone, somewhere for you if you need it. United through it all!

Cons

Must have thick skin, empathy, sympathy. The reason the average person travels (leisure, vacation, etc.) isn't the reason others may be traveling (tragedy). As in any customer service job. If you don't have some form of compassion that you can hold a grip on you may not last. Remember the story and use it as your guide. Also remember that the airport and operation never closes. You may be required to work at any given time or day. Most don't mind but some do and I've seen great people leave over that alone. Remember that is a huge choice you make when accepting the offer for employment. Do not waste their time and money on training, uniforms, badging, etc. if you don't think you can work late hours, holidays, your birthday, your kids birthday, etc. You can find people to trade with but it's never a guarantee.
