Pros
Ursa Major has an exceptional group of people doing extreme and interesting things together and it consistently works in a way that doesn’t feel like a regular job. The combination of their approach to culture and their approach to technology development leads to a tight knit crew that, despite normal human conflict that arises whenever people do difficult things, consistently pulls together to support each other in ways I have never seen at another company. Even your worst enemy would do anything to help you and help the company succeed, because it’s bigger than any of us. The limits on your potential are only self-imposed. Only job I’ve ever had where almost every day I’m surprised that it’s already 5 o’clock instead of surprised it’s only noon. Dog park makes having a dog and working full time a lot more doable. Food trucks come frequently for a good variety of lunch options. Working spaces are collaborative and fun. Teams is full of memes. Management is the most transparent I’ve seen and they seem to really care about the impact they have on others and the gravity of their roles. Everyone has a good time and works hard. It’s the best of all worlds and really as close to perfect as a job could possibly be.
Cons
Normal human drama occurs, some people don’t like other people, some people spread rumors, some people slack off and pretend to do more than they do, some people play the system to get ahead, but I’ve never seen a place where those strategies work so poorly. The cultural immune system kicks out bad vibes and makes you genuinely want to be better and find common ground with those you disagree with to make the company succeed.
