Pros

Uwajimaya ownership intentionally kept the team short staffed to get out of paying pandemic hazard pay. The executive committee is filled with underperforming people who never show up to the store. But they have earned their titles by having the last name of Moriguchi or being a friend of the family. The uwajimaya company is gentrifying the neighborhood by charging the highest rent rates in the community. Multiple times more expensive than any of their staff can afford. Management also has to take second jobs to afford to live.

Cons

The guests are out of control and have slapped me, cursed at me and threatened to fight me. The security team is a joke and puts the staff's safety at risk. Older staff members use new employees to carry the majority of the work load.

Pros

I enjoyed the cultural aspects of working at this Asian grocery store. Some of the coworkers were really, really nice. The cultural tradition festivals the store puts on over the course of each year are lots of fun.

Cons

Way too much stress and not enough support from management. The pressure was way too much, and they give you so little to work with. At one point, my department manager was doing the work of two people for the same pay, which meant they didn't have time to support us in our department.

Pros

The benefits package isn't bad for a grocery store

Cons

Low pay, management doesn't care about you, high-work load for the pay, sometimes people work off the clock, be prepared to be worked to the bone and be blamed for things that are out of your control.
