Pros

Salary is great, environment is pretty

Cons

Back-stabbing is unbelieveable. Mostly from the 'entrenched' employees (5+ years at the company). People literally go to your manager and complain about things they easily could handle directly with you. Some managers seem to enjoy sharing this with you and thus getting themselves in the middle of a grade school spat. My former manager was classic "queen bee" type. Gossipy and evil. Current one seems to enjoy drama too, though is a nicer person. Has a second-in-command that runs the show to his own liking, literally adding and subtracting people from the group meeting calendar on a weekly basis depending on whether he's ticked off at you or not. This is NOT the place to start a career, nor the place to advance in mid-career. If you're at the end of your career, have a thick skin, and don't give a flip about anything but the salary, come on in.

Pros

Great pay, ok perks (needs a shuttle) Nice campus Good work-life balance, 9-5 Casual

Cons

No shuttle Very very corporate vibe Brain drain Not attracting talent - not competing outside of salary An engineering company led by a salesperson never ends well Promotions are based on time served, though not officially Sloppy work ships (Web Client). Bad QA? Bad Eng? Bad PMs? All bad?

Pros

Experience on the ground floor shipping code and working with mature teams. Growth opportunity - VMware has many code bases and moving parts and you may get to touch them all Great compensation and benefits around the world Great flexibility with telecommuting and moving away from an R&D office Good internal infrastructure that promotes efficient development.

Cons

Extremely rapid growth and loss of corporate culture Acquisitions do not integrate and "join the family" even when code and tools can be shared. It's painful to see the wheel always get reinvented. Depending on your team, growth opportunities may be muted. You may be expected to keep your head down and toe the line. A good manager is key. Endless construction and few eco-friendly transit options (e.g. shuttles.)
