Good Place to Coast to Retirement

Pros

Valero offers a stable career with a lot of benefits beyond the standard salary and health benefits. The company is situated on a beautiful campus that includes gym, basketball court, tennis courts, full-service medical clinic for employees and family, cafeteria, subsidized daycare facility, etc.

Cons

Due to the desirability of the amenities and brand recognition, the company has historically been able to hire at relatively lower salaries. Career growth and any significant growth in compensation is somewhat of a crapshoot. Employees are typically looking for a place to retire not seek professional development. Status quo is acceptable. It's not a great place to work if you are seeking professional development.

Pros

The company offers good pay and a variety of benefits. Management is very accessible. You will get a variety of work experiences. Excellent bonuses are given.

Cons

You will work long hours. The company forces you to contribute a percentage of your salary to the United Way. Some people moved in to management have very limited technical skills in the area they are in.
