Pros

Lots of paid time off. Bonus twice a year. Average Pay but the benefits really help the salary.

Cons

The first year it's hard to get your requested paid time off for popular days off.

Pros

At Vanguard work-life balance is a big part of the culture. People almost never work weekends and the place clears up by around 7pm. The headquarters (in valley forge, PA) is very rural and peaceful and not at all what you'd expect from such a large asset manager.

Cons

Vanguard relies primarily on outside talent when it come to the most technical and interesting positions. PMs for actively managed fund, for example, are usually outsourced and much of the internal strategy relies on outside consultants.

A different culture

Pros

401k is good with match. It plan rules are too restrictive. Vacation is good depending on position. Some people never use all their vacation.

Cons

This company's culture has changed dramatically from the days of Bogle. It used to consider employees as its number one asset. Now they are the last consideration. I'm surprised at how accurate the responses are here. Raises are controlled and pay is generally poor and every year there at the same excuses: it was a tough year in the market, your new in the position, you need to work on "this" (even though you do and it doesn't apply). All the employee perks have disintegrated. Strangely enough, they trumpet crew feedback internally, but it will never get the honesty of these posts. It is sanitized internally and they don't even recognize the problems they now have. Also, in some areas there is so much process that any creative individual is stagnating, unable to change anything or be creative. Everything is locked down and difficult.
