Pros

Job security is amazingly awesome!

Cons

I can only speak for the IT division where I work. The company is based on old school values. They'll preach about how their technology is cutting edge, but they're FAR from it. It's a big bloated ship to be honest. Just look at the dated website, it's a complete mess. Way too many middle managers, way to many people sitting around pretending to be working hard, just collecting a paycheck and smiling.

Pros

Vanguard is ideal for two types of individuals. Those who are looking at building up their resumes, and those looking for a 2nd career (i.e. retired). This is very obvious by the awards Vanguard boasts they have won. One of the biggest benefits of working for Vanguard is similar to working for the Government, job security and benefits. You definitely will never go hungry working for Vanguard, but the pay is right on par...Literally. They try to purposely stay right on the mean.

Cons

VERY CORPORATE. You definitely need to play the network game and even if you do accomplish this, you will hit a ceiling fairly quickly unless you do something drastic like go and get your MBA from Harvard.

Pros

Work life balance - typical hours are 8 to 5 with 4 weeks vacation; management encourages time off and gives a good amount of freedom in determining your daily hours and your time off Friendly co-workers - they are always willing to help and are happy to take time out of their day to work with you, but they may be too friendly at times; people don't like to challenge the ideas of others and will rarely show strong disagreements in team settings Laid-back atmosphere - there is typically a low stress level and no one seems to get too worked up about their job

Cons

Below average salary and merit increases - the company claims to have a high level of 'total compensation' including retirement savings plans and good health benefits which is all somewhat true, but many people want a higher base salary level and a higher cash bonus; these pieces of compensation are much more tangible and could be used to attract better talent Lack of driven people - probably due to the lower salaries, limited pay for performance, and the laid back atmosphere; many people seem way to comfortable in their positions and are basically on auto pilot; they come in, do their job, and go home without putting in any extra effort; and, they are rewarded regardless since tenure is valued more than performance
