Pros

If you want to fly under the radar and get paid to do absolutely nothing as a software engineer, this place is great. Promotions are based entirely on tenure so you will not only not get fired but you'll be promoted!

Cons

You'll have to deal with things like: - A tech lead (80% IC role) that hasn't checked in code in 14 months. - A manager who has no clue what the pay bands are or who you even are. - Getting told you have to go into an office where not a single person from your team works because "working face to face is important". - Getting told you can't be promoted unless it's year-end AND you've been in your current role at least 18 months. If you get under-leveled you're stuck for 2 years. - Coworkers who turn 4 hours tasks into a 4 week ordeal. - Getting told to stop "pulling in work and start pushing other people's work" when you actually get things done in a timely manner. - Having 20-30% of your comp locked up in bonuses + long-vesting 401k and that being treated like it's done as a favor to you. Spoiler: it'll take you at least 18 months to see your full comp and you'll lose at least 10% of your comp the year you leave because they hold one of your year-end bonuses til June. - They do everything in their power to pay you as little as possible (just look up Sommer v. Vanguard Group)

Pros

Good amount of PTO and good 401k match and contribution. Decent health plans.

Cons

Keep cutting the "original hire" reasons to stay: 1. No warning took away retiree medical account. Generally over 100k for most that was available for health premiums (Medicare supplement). It wasa piece of my retirement plan that vanished. 2. No warning took away 10k retiree life policy. Hard to get a decent rate at retirement age. 3. Pay is generally 20 to 30% less than similar roles elsewhere. 4. Partnership was once up to 30% after 7 years or less. Now lucky if it is 15%. 5. Don't plan on moving up far unless you're in the "anointed" management or MBA program. As a female generally need to be tall skinny with long blonde hair. 6. Forcing a 3 day return to office to maintain"culture" which is a farce at this point. 7. Loyalty is all fake now.

Pros

There are some incredibly passionate people at Vanguard. The 401K match is the best I've found.

Cons

The few great people that are left are often drowned out by an apathetic mass of people. New hires get paid more than established and successful employees because of poorly thought-out HR policies. Senior leaders constantly parrot that "Vanguard cares about you", that may be true for them but no longer seems true for the average crew member. Layoffs are a thing, but they don't talk about it. It seems that Vanguard wants to transform into a more typical company but is refusing to pay like it.
