Pros

The mission - to transform the lives of people living with disabilities and help them live independently in the community - is unbeatable and makes you feel good every day. Benefit package is decent (although used to be very good - cut back in recent years). Management's heart is in the right place.

Cons

Not a lot of very bright people. Not allpositions have opporunity for advancement. Some managers very junior.

Very Caring, Fractured Organization

Pros

Great salary in comparison to other similar organizations in the area, extra opportunities to contribute more to the organization and to the community, ability to cross-collaborate with other organizations fairly easily, and generally supportive and honest about caring for our clientele. Ability to really feel like you are making a difference in people's lives, and build strong relationships both in the community and in the organization. And while often hamstrung by funding issues, the organization really does try to go above and beyond to be helpful. Vinfen is also one of the more influential organizations in the field, in the area, and it encourages continued education in the field, and tries to promote new recovery tools (with varying success).

Cons

Top-down organizational structure that allows little room for new ideas that aren't already supported by management, or access to funding for projects that are approved. The organization is split by region, resulting in managers with a variety of viewpoints and managerial capabilities. There are also a number of mid-level managers that are frankly quite bad at their jobs, although I don't personally feel like this issue extends to corporate management. And like most social work, its high intensity and and relatively low pay and low benefits overall, with a high rate of burnout. As a result, many teams are understaffed for extended periods of time.
