Pros

You are encouraged to collaborate across the organization

Cons

Do not apply to this employer. They do not treat their employees fairly. VT HR leadership is awful. This is all the way up to the most senior leader of the organization. He allows for members of of his team to bully. He is aware of the complaints and does nothing to stem the problem. Very smart people but no willingness to intervene to help employees who experience stress.

Pros

A good stepping stone institution to open up doors to work elsewhere.

Cons

HR is there to protect the University not the employee, policies are written as "guidelines" so in the event they are violated it probably won't matter. There's a reason for the very low retention rate of staff and faculty of color, despite entry level DEI trainings, microaggressions remain rampant across all levels of leadership. But there is no shame in using a brown person as a poster-child to showcase their "Commitment" to diversity and Inclusion. VT is a conservative institution and "freedom of speech" will be used to protect hate speech against is own students and employees.
