Good place to work. Beautiful Campus. Middle of nowhere.

Pros

Beautiful campus. Hokie stones are gorgeous. Relaxed atmosphere. Although I fell out with my manager, it took me a while to realize that I didn't have to worry about losing my job. Upper management were just as ineffective in dealing with my manager's unjustified complaints about me, as they were with my complaints about him. Once I realized this, I calmed down and focused on enjoying my time in VT and looking for new positions.

Cons

Problematic manager showed the downside of VT. Management likes the status quo and do not like to take action to resolve issues. Too much favoritism.

Pros

Beautiful campus in a nice college town.

Cons

It's all about "advancement" now -- bringing in money -- rather than education. Employee wages, treatment, and benefits vary widely depending on the college or center. Low wages for staff employees; "faculty" positions -- whether teaching, research, or administrative -- have MUCH better pay and benefits (twice the annual leave and 26 weeks of full pay for sick leave/year versus eight days for staff!), and administrative faculty often have less education and experience than staff employees. Benefits such as teleworking and flexible hours are available to employees in some colleges but not others. No opportunity for professional development (no money to join professional associations or attend conferences). VT doesn't follow written policies regarding use of performance reviews or warnings to terminate employees but simply eliminates and renames positions.
